Bokeh for St Valentine's Day

a theme

As suggested by Diaan and since we are in agreement — let me plug this properly as our very first 'automated' theme thing magic.

With that silly intro done — here are the rules of engagement:

  1. Date: Feb 14, 2011
  2. Requirements:
    Bokeh and Texture - the image needs to have both sharp and highly unfocussed portions. This might be hard if you're shooting using an instant camera, but not impossible.
  3. Colour: B&W or Colour & Red
  4. Theme: More love, less commerce. (Not mandatory)
  5. Rules: No Photoshop (basics such as cropping//contrast is allowed), must be newly shot (ie, not from your archive).
  6. Putting limitations on the work will promote creativity.

Yes lets go — just to inform you on how it will work:

on the day the theme is live: when you upload a photograph you will see an option to add your photograph to the theme as illustrated by this example:

Yep, that's all there is to it.

1ove, collaborates.

    Yes, they do!

    Serios tings (With a Buju Bunton voice)

  5. Neil Acid

    I don't know how to do this...
    links to [non video] tutorials are welcome.

    @Neil: I see you use a canon 450D which should be similar to what I have, so I'd say do this:

    1. set the aperture (pressing the star thing along with the Av± thing) to like 3.5
    2. then zoom in fully (55mm thing magic);
    3. set the focus to manual;
    4. turn the focus counter-clockwise (as in turn all the way to the right whilst looking through the view-finder);
    5. find a light source (candle; light bulb; or city/town lights);
    6. get the light source in focus — then slowly move way until it is all blurred (preferably into a shape of a circle or similar)
    7. now keep the light source there: whilst trying to find an object closer to camera and put that object in focus by moving it back and forth;
    8. then shoot.
    9. preview; rinse and repeat until desired effect is achieved

    It is rough and way too detailed but it should get your there — all the above steps can varied to your liking.

    happy hunting.

    an example, I think what Diaan is asking of us:

    and another one:

    The two examples above are perfect.

    Depth of Field (DOF) is where it's at. I've tagged a few of my images where there's a pronounced DOF to give a vague indication, although for this challenge more bokeh is better than less.

  10. Neil Acid

    thank you! =D

  11. ntsasa

    this is higher grade.
    lets see if i can play with the big boys.

    Yay — first theme of the year, done. First theme with a 'system to back it up', done!
